Where has Airplay gone

For quite a while now I have been using Spotify on my late 2013 Macbook and have been selecting my Marantz M-CR611 streaming system (which has Spotify Connect) on the Spotify desktop app with no problems. Some time ago I ripped all my CDs to iTunes and had been able to play these on the Marantz via Airplay. Today I decided not to waste any more money on a streaming service and just play my CDs from iTunes but for some reason airplay doesn't show as an option any more. I'm running Sierra (10.12.6) and the latest iTunes and I'm sure I've been able to play via Airplay since installing Sierra but the option is no longer there. If I go to System Prefs/Sound the only device that appears is Internal Speaker and in System Prefs/Display the only option in the drop-down menu for Airplay Display is "Off".

Can anyone help please – playing from iTunes just through the Macbook speakers is no use to me.

Thanks

Apple didn't really change anything with AirPlay with macOS Sierra. However, there are at least two possibilities:

  1. The Marantz (nice receiver btw) is not configured properly for AirPlay or AirPlay is not enabled on it.
  2. You are running a software firewall on your MBP that may be preventing the AirPlay set of protocols to be able to communicate between your MBP and the receiver.

To work AirPlay must first "discover" the device, then establish a secured connection to it, and finally, begin the streaming process. The discovery phase uses both Bonjour and IPv6. The fact that the Marantz cannot be found may be related to the discovery phase not working properly.
