2009 MacPro Memory upgrade.

I have a 2009 MacPro - EFI flashed to MacPro5,1 - with 2 x 2.26 Quad-Cores, 4 x Toshiba 3TB drives and 12GB RAM (6 x 2GB modules) and the ATI Radeon 4870 512MB. It runs High Sierra 10.13.

I use Lightroom CC & Photoshop CC (subscription, so always up to date) and using raw 12-bit files from a Nikon D800, exported TIFF file sizes can get quite large (>200MB).

Would I see noticeable speed improvements by installing more RAM, and what would be best configuration bearing in mind price is definitely an important issue? I seem to recall that when I first got this Mac a few years ago, I was advised that better performance was obtained by only using 6 of the 8 memory slots. I don't know for sure if this was true, or if it's still true.

I also use RipIt, Handbrake, and iSkysoft Media Converter to convert DVDs to .m4v files for use on my iPad or iPhone, but these appear to be CPU-intensive rather than RAM-intensive operations. I use SMC Fan Control to manually turn up the fan speed to improve cooling during conversion operations.

Would any really appreciable benefit be gained by acquiring and installing a standard Radeon 5870 1GB graphics card?

Thanks for any advice.
