Tbolt 3 to tbolt 2 between MacBooks not recogni...

I tried to do a migration by connecting my 2017 MacBook Pro with my 2013 MacBook Pro retina using the apple tbolt3 to tbolt2 adapter and an apple male-male USB-c cable but neither MacBook recognized the other was connected on the tbolt interface.  Shouldn't this work?

Read through this carefully, especially the link for connecting via Target Disk Mode, as I suspect you didn't do that: How to move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support

Hi,

You would need a Thunderbolt male to male cable to go from the Thunderbolt 2 adapter to the 2013 MBP.

Yes sorry you are correct I was using a tbolt2 male-male cable to connect through the adapter (got it confused with a male-male tbolt3 cable I was using on an unrelated problem with a charging adapter.

Same problem though as far as question on whether the two Macbooks should recognize each other using the tbolt3 to tbolt2 adapter and yes the tbolt2 male-male cable.

If both can get on the Internet without recabling, you can use your home network as the data pathway.

System preferences >  sharing >  [√] file sharing

Or use an external hard drive as the data mover. Cable to one, fill it up or clone your old drive, move to the other.
