how do you force quit the computer

Computer turns on with sound but display will not work  I was watching a movie and it went to sleep mode and display will not come back on 

Hi,

 

To shut down the Mac, hold down the power button for about 10 seconds. After it shuts down, start up while holding the shift key down.
