My macbook pro keeps shutting down suddenly, and I would like to try resetting the SMC. However, one of the keys I need to hold down on startup is the left shift key, which isn't working on my laptop. Is there another way to reset the SMC? Thanks!

Originally (about 2010) the instruction to reset the SMC (System Management Controller) was simply to hold down Shift-Control-Option and then press the power button, and I think that the notion of it being the Left Shift button was simply for convenience of all three keys being together. Have you tried using the right Shift button by holding down Control-Option with your left hand, then holding the right Shift button down and pressing the power button at the same time?

There is no indication that SMC reset has happened, and no obvious following results.

My more recent MacBook Pro (2014) also kept shutting down, and Apple diagnosed it in store as a failing graphics card - an expensive repair currently being done. No amount of SMC reset would have resolved that. Maybe a genius bar appointment will be more diagnostic for you.
