None of my folders are showing on my finder scr...

My MacBook Pro 9.1, 15" won't show my desktop folders.  It was suggested I may be out of storage space.  If this is the case, what is the maximum size internal hard drive I can use?  Otherwise, why are none of my folders show up? I'm running OS X.11.6.
