Why does my mail useage show 2.6 Gb when I have...

My mail usage is showing 2.6 GB when I have no more than 50 total email messages in all folders. This is on my iPad2.  My iPhone 5 is showing 1.5 GB.  I am constantly deleting messages and emptying the trash, but it doesn't help.  Is the only solution to remove and reinstall my mail?

You could very easily rack up the gigs on a few messages if those messages have attachments to them. Do you have some with photos or large attachments?

Are there also any folders in your e-mail? For example a person could have large folders full of old e-mails, etc that contribute to the size issue.

How much space is used by your Other? You may be able to reduce.

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

The messages I had were very small with few pictures and few attachments.  What I ended up doing was deleting and reinstalling my Mail account.  My usage dropped from 2.6 GB to 86 MB!  It automatically added back all the messages that I have in Inbox on my iMac.  Personally I think this is an Apple bug and that mail was not really being deleted from Trash.  I've now read about this same problem with others.  I plan to keep an eye on it to see if it happens again.  Maybe I should have called Applecare, but I chose not to.

I don't think there is a solution. I don't think Apple wants to find a solution. Personally, after 5 years of problems, I definitely believe that it's a BIG BUG!
Well, I tried everything, from Hard reset to manually delete mail.

The ONCE solutions to delete the "personal email account" (or more if you have more accounts) and then register it again.

I tried to change the option from IMAP to POP3: Same problem. Even if You delete manually your email, they remain stored and neither the "genius" in the assistence know where. In those years I talked to the upper level of engineer in the assistence, and no way to understand what happens.
Well, we thought the problem came ot from "spotlight" that allows you to search emai stored: Neither! Deactivating spotlight always the same problem. No email in the smartphone, 3 GB space used. I lost a lot of time doing the hardest test with Apple engineers at phone.

The summary? well, my guarantee expired and NO ANSWER to the problem!
