networking mac pro <> mac air

i get dyslexic every time i have to reset this setting. why i have to reset is another issue i probably need to work on. anyway, can anyone walk me through this and hopefully i will remember next time?

right now i am trying to LOG IN to the mac air from the mac pro.

i click on Finder > mac air name

and i get a dialog box

it gives me a number of bullet options:

Guest

Registered User

Using an Apple ID

i click on Registered User and the name of the MAC PRO is listed

i enter my password of the MAC PRO

it jiggles and tells me it is the wrong password

i enter the name of the MAC AIR (the one i am trying to access from the Mac Pro)

i enter the password of the MAC AIR

no go

now i click on "Using an Apple ID"

it autocompletes to the /correct/ Apple ID (and there are no other options in the pulldown anyway)

it jiggles telling me /something/ is wrong

any idea what i am doing wrong?

ALSO, the mac air is currently listed as "MacBookAir (2)" this seems to happen a lot and i don't know why. i am going to reset it to "MacBookAir". anyone know if this could be the issue or why it gets renamed like this? it makes me sort of crazy in an ocd sort of way (which is really crazy).
