No connection to external display, Air 11

Had this mac for a few years now and the thunderbolt port worked perfectly when connecting to an external monitor. One day this just stopped working. I've changed the adapter, cables and tried the adapter/cable with other macs and it works with those, so I'm guessing it is down to my own mac.

Ive reset the PRAM and SMC a few times , which is commonly suggested, yet this hasn't helped.

It seems as if the mac doesn't detect that anything is being connected through this port.

Just wondering whether anyone has had the same problem or knows of a fix before I give up hope. The rest of the mac works smoothly to my knowledge.
