IMac won't start after power failure

After a short power interruption yesterday my iMac starts to load but the progress bar stops 3/4 of the way and the machine turns off.  I have succeeded in opening in recovery mode and I can see my hard drive but when I try to run first aid it says it cannot repair drive And although initial it show 274gb used as soon as I run the first aid it goes to 999. I am currently trying to make a copy to an external drive as no backup but this is more of an inconvenience rather than a total disaster.  Am I to assume my next step is to erase and start again or has my HFD had it?

First I would reset the SMC How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

and NVRAM How to reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

and try booting into safe mode Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

If none of those helped I would then attempt to erase the hard drive and reinstall.

Thanks Mike. All of these options have now been tried with no success so I think an erase and reinstall are my only choice now.  I much appreciate your response

Hello Annee,

Go to disk Utilities in the applications folder.   Click on your HD and then on repair disk.

Hope I haven't overlooked something.   I see you have tried to repair drive.

I hadn't tried this and it showed the status of my drive as full instead of 247GB and failed to repair.  I have now erased the disk and restarted.  I have not lost any serious data but I will be checking why my time capsule backed up the other two machines but not this one (moral of the story - it's not safe just to assume the backup is working). I will then start the slow process of resetting up apps.
