My external hard drive, which is connected via firewire, changed to a read only drive.  I want to write to this drive.  How do I change the setting to write to the drive?

If the drive comes from the Windows world, it will probably have an NTFS format. MacOS doesn't like NTFS and won't write to it. Would have to get some third party driver to enable writing.

Hi I have the same question please provide some steps on what to do to get external hard drive to read and write on my apple mac... also is there a easier method without formatting the external drive.

You have two options to make an NTFS drive writable by MacOS:

1. Download and install a third party app such as Tuxera or Paragon

2. Format the drive for MacOS rather than for Windows. Make sure you copy off all your data first since formatting will remove access to all existing data on the drive.

Option 2 is the preferred option for several reasons including not having to rely on some third party app developer to ensure their app continues to work and be supported.
