Cannot fully sign

iCloud initially accepts my Apple id password at initial sign-in on my Mac mini.

 

iCloud then asks for a second, apparently different password, since it won't accept my Apple id password for this "verification password," or next, second 'step' in the process. It usually throws up two to three entry boxes/notifications for this and none of these will accept my Apple id password, much to my vexation!

 

If it will accept my id password to start with in the 'first step,' why won't it accept that same password for this 'second step'?

 

What's up w/ this? Please advise. Thanks!

 

Mac mini: 3GHz Intel Core i7; 16 GB Ram; Fusion 1.11T; MacOS Sierra 10.12.6
