2016 MacBook Pro Hardware Updates

I bought a new 2016 MacBook Pro 15" in January 2017. I've had two common and well documented issues:

 

1. Keyboard keys differ in feedback (auditory and touch). My spacebar doesn't "click" anymore on the right side. Not being able to remove it for cleaning like the other keys I decided to pay a visit to the Apple Store.

 

2. My display has a horizontal scuffed line in the center caused by the edge of the touchpad/spacebar. I've barely carried my Macbook around and I've taken extreme care of it. There has never been a force applied on the display with the lid closed.

 

I brought it in at my local Apple Store today thinking they would replace the display and the spacebar. I was surprised to be told they were going to change the whole display with the lid as well as the top case, which includes a lot of components (touchbar, keyboard, touchpad, even the battery).

 

I am wondering what is the reason for changing so many parts? Did they upgrade the hardware recently? Did Apple increase the screen clearance with the keyboard or even the butterfly mechanism that is known to fail so easily?

Apple would be the best one to ask about that, unless someone who has already asked Apple and gotten an answer posts here. Given the many posts on this issue, I wouldn't be at all surprised if what you surmised is correct, although Apple Store employees may not be allowed to tell you that.

I agree with you on the fact that Apple would be the reference to answer my question. However I doubt that regular store employees know anything about engineering reviews such as the display-keyboard clearance or the butterfly mechanism.

It turns out it is cheaper in total dollars in inventory to have more complex field-replaceable units and fewer of them. One part can fix six different problems.

 

Conspiracy theories are more fun, but they rarely pan out.
