Swim Splits are not accurate

I have a new Series 3 watch and use it mainly as a fitness tracker. I am a lifelong swimmer, and have begun using it to track my swims in the pool.  I know some people have had problems with it counting laps correctly and tracking strokes, but I don't have those problems.  But, for example, yesterday I went for a 3,000 yard swim.  When I was done, I reviewed the workout on my phone.  At the top, it says i swam 900 Yards Backstroke, 900 Breaststroke, 1200 Freestyle.  Correct!  I did!  When I click on "Auto Sets," it tells me I did 3 mixed sets of 1000 yards each, which is also correct.   Then, for example, it says under the first 1000 years swim, I finished in 16:34 (which sounds about right), followed by a rest of 1:42.  It reports an average split speed of 1:39 per 100 yards, which is, again, correct.  So far so good.

But then, when I click on "Splits," my splits don't match that.  For one thing, they are all under my 1:39 average, which is obviously not possible.  And some of them are pretty fast-- one split is calculated at 1:08!  Sad to say, I don't swim that fast anymore.  And if you add up the 10 individual splits, you get 13:51.  Which is wrong.

The thing that is weird is that the splits are pretty consistent in the sense that the freestyle ones are fastest, and the breaststroke ones are slowest, which seems about right (though backstroke is close to freestyle, which isn't true, like most people, my freestyle is consistently faster than my backstroke).

Is it possible that this thing only counts a my swim time when I am actively moving my arms?  Which would mean it's ignoring the time I spend streamlining off the walls?  Or it is assuming open turns (that is, allowing a few seconds for me to turn around), when I do flip turns?
