iTunes could not connect... driving me mad.

I get the following message and accompanying bouncy icon, many times, every day when working quietly at my computer.

This is highly confusing for many reasons.

 

1. There is no iPad connected to this computer. I've walked into my bedroom and entered the passcode on my iPad, as requested, but that didn't seem to help.

2. I have reconnected the aforementioned iPad several times, entered the passcode and ejected it properly, hoping it will clear this message. It doesn't.

3. Occasionally, the 'Cancel' and 'Try Again' buttons freeze, meaning I have to force quit iTunes to get rid of the message.

 

If anyone has any idea why this infuriating bug has been sent to torment my iTunes listening pleasure I'd highly appreciate it. If not, then a Spotify subscription is going to appear so I can simply keep iTunes closed.

 

Technical stuff iMac OSX 10.12.6, iTunes 12.7.0.166, iPad mini on 11.0.1
