Preview not working after Sierra 10.12.5 update
Whenever I click on a pdf file, Preview does not open it any more. This has only been the case since updating Sierra to 10.12.5 this week. I can open the files with Adobe, but prefer to keep using Apple's Preview. Please be gentle when replying to this notification, or offering any suggestions.
Click once on a pdf file, then press Command-i to get info up. Go to the Open with section and change it to Preview,
then click on Change All so that all your pdfs will open in Preview.
Thanks for your reply, Eau. Unfortunately, I did that already, and it did not work. If I set pdfs to open with Adobe, it's ok; however, I prefer to use Preview and am somewhat perplexed that it doesn't work as before.
Try starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support
Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
Of course, you have to reset to Open with: Preview to test.
I have the same issue as @tomfromashfield, but slightly different. The PDF document opens, but I get a spinning cursor and the Preview UI is totally locked up. Doesn't happen for all documents though. Extremely annoying.
Do a backup, preferable 2 backups on 2 separate drives.
Quit Preview.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Remove the following. You may not find them all. Restart and test.
Containers/com.apple.Preview
Containers/com.apple.quicklook.ui.helper
Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState
Credit Linc Davis for this solution.
This solution worked perfectly for me. Problem solved! Preview kept crashing on startup after I updated to Sierra. Linc, you didn't mention removing the Home folder file Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist, but I also removed that one for good measures. Thank you so much, Linc!
Hi Eric,
The solution didn't work for me. I followed the steps and deleted all the files I could find except two. I am using a Macbook Pro from 2010 with Sierra. There are no issues with its hardware or software. The problem with Preview surfaced today and I cannot open any pdf in the app at all. Do you have any further suggestions?
Thanks,
Nish
