How can I get rid of the dock on ipad? It does nothing useful, just gets in the way.

You cannot. The Dock on iOS devices has never been removable.

It's always been a place to put your frequently used Apps, and now it lets you access the multitasking options to open more than one app at a time, and use Slide Over, and Split Views.
