Full Mac Mail Restore from Time Machine

So thanks Mac Mail, today I turned on my Macbook Pro only to find that my email accounts had completely and totally disappeared, for no reason (computer had been off right!) and rather than try and re-create accounts and re-download a LOT from the servers, I thought I would use Time Machine to restore to a few weeks ago (last backup) and just download new mails from then ...

So nothing works.

Why can't I simply restore the entire Library/Mail folder (containing V4 folder and mbox files) and go from there?  Basically, restoring that folder does little but add an additional folder "backup" or something to my mail creating a new and total mess, without restoring all accounts, and without restoring everything 'as it was'. 

For goodness sake, where are the other prefs and so on stored? Why isn't full restore of Mail folder sufficient?  I now don't trust the time machine backups of my emails at all ... I've tried a few ways, and simply cannot restore the entire accounts.  Do the accounts need to be re-created first or something?

Your email messages were perfectly safe the whole time, and do not need to be restored. In addition, restoring them will not get Mail to work, because it wants to create a new V5 from your old V4 messages.

What has changed is not the messages, but the Accounts -- the database that supports the individual Email message files.

Did you ask Mail to import your old email Accounts, or your old emails?

Have you tired just re-enteering your previous email Account information?

I simply tried to restore the Mail folder from Time Machine, but I see, it does make sense that wasn't the problem, rather the accounts.  Ok, so why would the accounts disappear overnight for no reason?? 

No, I ended up completely deleting the Mail folder contents and am painstakingly re-downloading all emails from the server.
