Way in iOS 11 to prevent thumbnails from going ...
With iOS 11, now when I open many thumbnails (app or "bookmarks"), they go to the right side of the lower taskbar. Is there a setting to prevent that? It's very annoying. I want to control what's on the taskbar!
Once down there, the only way I see to get rid of them is to hold a main screen thumbnail like I was going to delete or move some, then tap the "-" in the taskbar thumbnail. It's a cumbersome process and a waste of user's time.
In general, I think iOS 11 has made the iPad (Mini 2) more cumbersome to use, requiring a lot more time switching screens. I'd also like to get rid of the most of the new settings icons on the right of the new main screen, for example getting rid of Music, the bell, moon, clock, camera, sound and screen mirroring icons. In fact, getting rid of that whole section, like previous iOS versions, would make the iPad (Mini) easier to use, because their presence forces other open apps off the screen to the left.
It is called the Dock as opposed to "taskbar."
Try going to Settings > General > Multitasking & Dock, and turning off "Show Suggested and Recent Apps."
The app icons show up there so you can drag them to open a second multitasking window.
You can turn it off in: Settings > General > Multitasking & Dock > Show Suggested and Recent Apps.
Thanks! What about that whole new section on one of the main screens that has the icons for settings, wi-fi, Music, bell, sound, camera, etc.? I don't need all that, and it forces a number of open apps showing off the screen to the left. Is there a way to get rid of that new section?

iOS 11 introduced that placeholder on the Dock to house the three most recently used app so you can re-launch them quickly. There is a way to turn if off by going to Settings>General>Multi-tasking & Dock, and switch off "Show Suggested & Recent Apps". Here is a video that shows all of the uses and management of the new Dock:

You're talking about Control Center. It appears when you swipe up from the bottom of the screen. Just avoid doing that, or double pressing the home button.
Well yes, but I don't need a Control Center. From a practical standpoint, it helps me zero, while taking away because its presence takes up room, forcing some open apps showing off the screen to the left. In settings, it seems like except for a couple of items one can only add to it, not subtract.
