Upgrade from OS

I have a 2014 MacBook Air in my family, and the main user has neglected to update OS progressively.

As such the Mac is still using OS-X 10.9.5.

I tried to upgrade directly to OS High Sierra to enable to some App upgrades. The install of High Sierra became 'hung' and now in the aftermath the MacBook is now 'confused'.

Under the App store it shows OS High Sierra as "Installed" - and thus won't allow the upgrade to start over.

Under the Apple icon 'About this Mac', it still shows the OS as OS-X 10.9.5, and when you press 'Software Update' it doesn't show any OS updates.

In essence the machine is stuck in limbo.

Request any suggestions for getting the OS upgrade to occur properly. I have tried to shutdown and restart with no resolution.
