OS Compatibility / Slow iMac

I have a mid 2007 iMac (spec attached) It's slow at starting up and can become unresponsive at times. I don't particularly want to trade it or scrap it.

I have two questions;

1. What is the latest version of OS X I can sensibly load without further degradation in perfomance?

2. Is there anything I can do to improve it's responsiveness?

In my opinion, this is the newest os you can run without slowing down your mac.

To improve performance there are some very good utilities on the App Store like Memory Clean 2 and Disk Cleanup which i use and they have improved a lot the performance of my old mac.

Also you should consider upgrading the RAM to 4GB. It is not that expensive nor that hard.

Also you should do a clean installation of OS X Yosemite

If it is still very slow try reseting the NVRAM

Ignore the directions provided above! Never ever install a RAM cleaner or ANY third party maintenance app!!

If you upgrade the RAM to 6 GB (OWC makes a kit available at 6.0GB OWC Memory Upgrade Kit For MacBook, MacBook Pro and iMac

then you can run El -Capitan. However considering the age of the computer you may want to begin saving for it's replacement.
