How can i tell if someone is 'sharing' my compu...
I was on my Mac HD, and all of a suddon i saw a little icon of a laptop under a "Shared" title and it said Kylies computer, i clicked on it and a moment later it dissapeared. how can i tell if i have been breached or if someone is secretly on my computer or network via Shared?
Navigate to System Preferences - Sharing and see what sharing activities you have turned on.
interesting, i only have Bluetooth enabled. wonder what that was that i saw on my HD- any other thoughts?
Are you running Hamachi or any other VPN software?
not that i know of
Launch the Network Utility application. Select the Netstat tab and then the button marked
Display routing table information
Click the Netstat button, or press the return key. After a delay, some text will appear in the window. Copy it into a reply to this message. Please post the text, not a screenshot.
ok - have done all that and i see the text but i am hesitant to copy the text on here, looks like a lot of personal info no? can you tell me what i might be looking for?
There's no easy way to answer that question, but look for something like "ham0".
dont see anything like that- in any column
If you don't know who "Kylie" is, then you can assume that someone has gotten into your network. I suggest you check the settings of your wireless router. It should be using "WPA 2 Personal" security, not "WEP." Change the network password. Make sure the router can't be administered remotely.
Devices that appear under Shared are devices that have connected to the same network that your Mac is connected to, and themselves are set to allow others to connect to them. They appear in the Shared list because they are available; it does not mean they are connected to your Mac.
If you have a wireless router, then that's most likely what "Kylie" connected to, however briefly. Could have been a computer, could have been a smartphone, iPod, anything that is networkable. It is unlikely (and nearly impossible for most people), to connect directly to your Mac unless you have Sharing turned on in System Preferences.
In my experience I have found that most people do not have any security set up on their wireless routers, which means that anyone who discovers their network can connect to it! Check your wireless router to see what, if any, security settings are implemented. Others have made their own suggestions, my recommendations are:
- Change the name & password of the Admin user account in your router. (Usually you have to add a new Admin account and then delete the original Admin account.) This is because most consumer routers come with a generic default admin login & password. I won't say here what it is, but it's well known.
- Make your wireless network private (i.e. turn off SSID broadcasting)
- Turn on WPA encryption (better still, use WPA2 Personal if available in the router. Do not use WEP)
- Use a strong password for WPA/WPA2 access (at least 8 characters, mixture of letters, numbers & symbols; but no real words or repeated characters). Do not use the default password that came with the router.
- Turn off remote administration in the router
- Turn on MAC address filtering; enable only the MAC addresses of your own devices
If you think your wireless network has been breached, do the above and then also do the following:
- Change the name of your network (make it an unusual name, almost like a password)
- Change the network password
Of course, after making these changes you will also need to update the wireless network logins (network name, encryption type, paassword) in each of the devices (computers) that you use to access your network. I have generally found it best to delete the previous network name from the list of preferred networks in System Preferences > Network > WiFi > Advanced > Preferred Networks (in Lion; may be slightly different in other versions of OS X.)
ok have done all this, thanks everyone for you help. much appreciated
I don't understand when you ask to reply and all that .. I got the text box and I copied it but how do I reply ? Thank you
