I have a 2017 iMac with the SD card reader slot...

I have a 2017 iMac with the SD card reader slot in the back. I tried plugging my old SD card reader into a USB port in the back so I could more easily plug in me SD cards in the front. It does not work. My SD cards do read when I plug them into the iMac, so it is not a problem with the cards. Do I need a newer SD card reader or is the a design of the iMac such that will not accept external SD card readers?

Divide and conquer.

Where does the sdcard work?

Have you tried the sdcard in the back?

Have you tried multiple sdcards?

Have you tried the usb device in another computer.

Good questions! I have two new SD cards (new camera) and they both work in the back SD slot on my new iMac. Neither card works in my "old" card reader. This card reader worked all the time on my Mac Pro tower--which I no longer have. Got any more things to try? Thanks! (Maybe the card reader doesn't work with these newer SD cards? Hmmm...my daughter has my Mac Pro so maybe I should try these new cards and my old reader in that computer next time I'm at her house.)

Well...  All these flash camera cards drive me batty.

Your new cards don't work in your old reader. Maybe memory size or read speed or some other spec.  There all types of spec code  on these cards.

You should try your old sdcards with the old usb adapter and your new computer.  I'll bet they work.  I'll bet if you checked the specs on your usb sdcard reader that it doesn't support your sdcards.

You need to buy a new usb sdcard reader.   Check specs carefully.

Thanks so much for help and support!
