i7 2011 vs i7 2016
Hi guys I need some thought...
I have a Mbp 2011 i7 2.2 8gb 512hd and I have a very good offer for a mbp 2016 i7 2.4 16gb 256ssd. I don't know what to do. I mean is there any real difference between an i7 2011 and a i7 2016?
Hi,
You don't specify which 2011 MBP you have, nor its size, but here's a speed comparison. Note the 2011 has a quad core processor while the 2016 has a dual core processor, so the 2011 has a speed advantage with processor intensive tasks, while the 2016 has the advantage over very light tasks. Note also that the 2011 has a full array of ports while the 2016 has only two Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports (will likely require adapters). Note also that 2011s have had their share of GPU issues, actually causing Apple to create a free repair program, which has expired: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
HI tjk,
Yes sorry. This is my Macbook Pro MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) - Technical Specifications with matte display and 2.2 Ghz processor, 8gb ram 500hd 7200rpm
I was wondering if there is any advantages to buy the new one (15 inches I will appreciate suggestions) or it will be enough put an ssd 512 + uprade to 16gb my ram....
I use my mac for many heavy tasks with CreativeCloud web+video+digital publishing, often with many of the cc software open at the same time.
So, because my mac now is very low and it is becoming very difficult work with CC, I'm trying to figure out how to speed up my work.
To check out if RAM will help, run for awhile doing your normal tasks, open Activity Monitor > click on the Memory tab > take a screen shot and post it here.
An SSD will certainly speed things up; how fast is rather subjective.
If RAM is a bottleneck, and the extra speed an SSD will supply, then I think upgrading these things will get you by for another 2-3 years. Note that Apple lists this MBP as "Vintage," so they no longer work on them/supply parts.
For now, the 2011 will run the latest OS, Sierra, but it may not be able to run the next new OS or maybe the one after that.
I am not a fan of the new MBPs, so if it was me, I'd do the upgrades and wait for Apple to work out all the bugs in the new MBP lineup in a few years.
Thank you for your reply.
Yeah, I am not a fan either of the new MacBook Pro (impossible to upgrade, with a nonsense touch bar, crazy expensive and everything connected with adaptors...). The only reason I was considering to buy it was because my MBP in the last months was so slow and sometimes it is a pain open even only two creative cloud apps at the same time. It runs El Capitan smoothly by the way.
So, I went to Apple Store because my logicboard last week is gone. They proposed me the new MBP with a very great deal, but even with this great offer I don't know if the new MBP worth it. Yes the new MBP is really responsive, everything seems smooth and really fast (at least the OS) but I don't know if it is smooth because the new i7 or the 16gb or the SSD. However if I can get the same responsiveness only upgrading my RAM and SSD, I will stick with my old for another year.
As soon as they will return my mac I will post RAM status thank you. Do you think could be something else to slow down the performance?
My main concern remain the graphic card. I had the issue you talked about and Apple replaced the logic board in 2015 (the same logic board already died last week...), but now the problem is CC doesn't support that card so maybe the new MacBook Pro could have an advantage on this side but I don't know how big.
A really difficult decision, I miss so much Steve's age when a new mac was a no-brainer decision and a breathtaking computer.
Like you I have the 2011 MBP as well, and it has been great. I did have an issue with the graphics card issues, but Apple replaced the logic board for free. Mine still works like new, and I have no reason to upgrade personally. You however, it is up to you. The new MBP's are nice, and have the newest hardware, and support the latest software. Your 2011 MBP also supports the latest Apple software... Tough choice for you, but think about the benefits of upgrading, and the benefits of keeping your 2011. When I was in your shoes debating on upgrading from my early 2008 MBP to the Early 2011 MBP it was hard. lol
If I was buying a machine today, this is what I'd get:

I had the same issue, I had MacBook pro 17" late 2011 2.4 GHZ with 4 GB Ram and 750 GB HD, and in front of the MAC store the new one looks amazing, but when I see the specs similar to Late 11, the price and the adapters I decided not to buy. Last month I to upgrade by 1 TB SSD and 16 GB RAM, it cost me around 450 USD and my old mac with bigger screen is flying. I'm working with parallels with Windows 10 simultaneously and I have no issues during the last month. I enjoy to have a big screen 17" and the computer flying.
If you are thinking to spend more than 2,500 in a new computer with new hardware do it, if you have the money, but if the money is a concern, update it, you will have similar performance with your upgrades and the new MacBook pro.
I don't disagree with your statements in general, but one of them needs to be clarified.

The 2017 15" MBPs are 25%-30% faster than the 2011 17"; that's significant, and there's nothing that can be done to close that gap.
