What does the subscribed feature in a podcast's...

If I don't want to have a certain podcast in my iTunes anymore I just delete it.  So can someone tell me what this subscribed button does?

If you subscribe to a podcast, new episodes will be downloaded to your device automatically.

No, as you can see in the screenshot, there is a completely separate option for automatic downloads.  So the Subscribed feature clearly refers to something else.
