iPad does not recognize soft keyboard in portra...

I just bought a new Smart Keyboard to replace an old one that had stopped working.

When I am holding the iPad in portrait format, and the Smart Keyboard is folded back, the iPad will not recognize the software keyboard. I can only type if I disconnect the SMart Keyboard entirely or if I unfold it and use it landscape - not always convenient.

This wasn't the case with my last Smart Keyboard, which toggled between soft keyboard and Smart Keyboard intuitively. How do I fix this? I did not get a new iPad - just a new keyboard.
