I want to keep the pictures on my iPad!

I am a new iPad user. I just noticed that the device is moving older photos I've taken into a "ready to be deleted" file. I want to control how long I keep my photos. My iPod never deleted pictures. Why is this happening now? Is there anything I can do to stop it? It's not about space. I have lots on my new iPad. I realize that I can download them to my pc, but I'd like to have them available on my iPad.
