3,1 Rsync causes black screen and loud fans

When I am rsyncing on my mac pulling from a remote device, it causes a black screen and high fans.

I have reformatted the drives. I have used two different drives.

No obvious errors in the console at the time of the crash.

The machine can be up for hours without this happening, but a few minutes into the rsync and without fail the system goes down.

Would something like defective heat sensors or voltage sensors be an issue?

I am running El Capitan.

24GB, MacPro 3,1 2008 Quad 3Ghz.

Stumped.

Don't want to have to replace this until the new MacPro!

Any suggestions most welcome
