Why can't I save to the desktop anymore?

I've had my iMac about 6-months and using high sierra 10.13 with no problems.  For some reason I now can't save anything to the Desktop anymore.  I first noticed it with WORD and EXCELL, and I find that it's also that way with Adobe Elements.  I can create a folder on the desktop, but I can't save to it.  When I hit "save-as" I can save to Me, Applications, Documents, Downloads and a few previously saved places.   Desktop is listed, I can click on it and it looks liked it worked, but nothing shows up on the desktop.   If I select FINDER, the file is not there.   If I go to Spotlight Search it says the file is in Documents, but Documents does not show it.  I'm currently saving all to Download and then physically moving the file/document to the Desktop. The function that I like so well is no longer available.  Any suggestions?  Thank you.
