find files

I have many missing files (more on that below).  I followed instructions to locate them given elsewhere - turn off "Keep your iTunes library organised", play one missing file, when asked to locate it, find it, then you're asked, "Would you like iTunes to use the location of "<the file you just found>" to find other missing files in your library?"

when I do this, it only finds a few of my missing files.  I have over 1000, all in the same place, but it only finds a handful at a time!!!  So frustrating.  Any ideas?

backstory: iTunes v12.7 keeps crashing on my Windows 7 machine.  I thought I'd try the latest update & backed everything up.  Sure enough, it died, so I restored to v12.5.5.5, the last version I had that worked properly.  However, when I started the old version, something was all screwed up - the drop-down you use to choose between Music, Apps, etc., was showing the wrong things.  None of the options in the drop-down list was Music.  However, I could see all my Music in whatever the other category was that it was starting up in.  I thought it must've been a library error so grabbed my old library from the Previous iTunes Libraries sub-folder, but I think the damage was done - it had moved over 1000 of my files to the Unknown Artist\Unknown Album folder, which is where they all are now
