Preview blurry with Sierra 10.12.5

After updating the MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) to Sierra 10.12.5, Preview for viewing pdf documents is not working correctly. Thumbnails will not load and the full image is blurry. The documents are clear when using the Adobe Acrobat Reader software, and these same documents were clear prior to this latest update.

Preview has been a great feature for macOS, but lately there have been major issues (notably when trying to combine multiple pdf documents via the "insert" feature) that lead me to download other programs that reliably do what Preview used to provide.

Try opening a pdf in Preview:

a) after restarting in Safe Mode: blurry?

b) after restarting normally again: blurry?

c) while logged in to a new user account: blurry?

And what is it that doesn't work concerning the Insert feature?

I don't normally use Insert from the menu, but I have combined pages from different documents, as well as deleted and reordered pages, using Preview for years without issue, and it continues to work for me in 10.12.5; I have just tried Insert and it seems to work too.

Hi, I have the same issue on a brand new iMac 4K w/ 32G ram, I upgraded from 16K because my prior machine slowed a bit with multiple apps like PShop, AI, etc. open. Now this one with nothing but Preview open renders slowly and thumbs don't appear for any multi page PDF as if it's a RAM issue, can you help? My prior 16K Ram iMac never once had an issue in 2 yrs with Preview

Hi Luis, I am having the same problem as the OP. Had it in Sierra and followed through to HS for me. I followed your steps and here are my answers:

a) Safe mode the same PDF in Preview was perfect.

b) Normal restart then recreated the problem, very blurry after seeing how Preview should look.

c) Created a new user and the same PDF in Preview was perfect.

So I followed the Apple Support page and deleted all Login Items on my user account (only 1 was there, iTunes Helper) and restarted to find the same issue. I noticed the entire graphics (fonts mainly) appeared to look better on the new user account when I was comparing settings. Display on my user account IS set to "Default for display" which I saw was a solution to others on here.

Any ideas what I should do next?
