connecting mini

I have a 2016 macbook pro with 4 thunderbolt ports and would like to connect it to my apple 27 inch cinema display which only has a mini-display port connection.  I have the apple thunderbolt 2 adapter to usb-c but that does not pass signal to the mini-display port, even though the connector is the same.

Has anyone succeeded in connecting thunderbolt 3 to mini-display port? what adapter would allow that to work?

At this writing, Apple has not released a USB-C to [Mini OR Full-Size] DisplayPort adapter. You will need to use a third-party adapter, such as these, rated at up to 3K (3840 by 2160):

Use caution if you shop on Amazon -- some of theirs are shipped direct from the Far East and take a full three weeks to arrive.
