Calculators on iOS and OSX differ
Summary: Apple calculators behave differently on iOS and on OSX.
I have difficulty understanding the working of the Apple calculator. It has a display where you enter values and see results, and may have a stored function that operates on the display when you press "=". My question is how that function is determined and when it changes.
Example: You press, in that order, "3" and "+". Now the display holds "3", and the stored function apparently is "add 3":
- press "=" and you see 6
- press "=" again and you see 9
- press "=" again and you see 12.
Now you press "7" and then
- press '=" and you see 10
- press "=" again, and you see 13.
So far, the stored function is still "add 3".
You can change it as follows: press "9" and then "+". You see "9". Now:
- press "2" and you see "2"
- press "=". You see "11".
- press "=" again. You see "13".
So the stored function now is "add 2".
The rule here seems to be, that if you enter a new value ("9"), then an operator ("+"), and again a value ("2"), the stored function becomes "add the last value entered", in this case "add 2".
I find this not so easy to wrap my head around, but I can remember and use it.
If this were all, I would not write this question. However, there is more and, moreover, it is where the iOS and the OSX calculators differ. It is with unary functions such as √.
On iOS 11.0.3 (following up on the previous actions):
- enter "256"
- press "√" and you see 16
- press "=" and you see 4
- press "=" and you see 2
So the stored function now seems to be "take the square root".
However, on OSX Sierra 10.12.6, same situation:
- enter "256"
- press "√" and you see 16
- press "=" and you see 18
- press "=" and you see 20
Here, the stored function still seems to be "add 2".
I would expect two calculators by Apple with similar designs on different platforms to act similarly. The iOS version to me seems more logical than the OSX version. Which is in error?
