muted texts coming through watch

I've got a group text thread that I mute due to the activity on it. I have the Watch (series 3) set to "Mirror my iPhone".

It seems it's not working. When I get a text on the muted thread, the iPhone works properly and doesn't give a notification. However, the watch does. The only thing I can do to stop the notifications is turn off text message notifications (which obviously isn't ideal).

Is this a known issue? Any fix/workaround currently known?
