How can I reprogram keys to move cursor on my n...

I have a new MacBook Pro 2017 and want to reprogram some keys to, along with depressing the control key, allow me to emulate the cursor movement and other acts one could perform with the keyboard on the ancient WordStar program (O.K., I may be old-fashioned but in writing I don't like to move my fingers too far from the old, typing keyboard!

I've tried using the keyboard pane in System Preferences but nothing there seems to work.
