iOS 11 Control Center messed up now...

Since the update, swiping up from the bottom while in an app doesn't show the Control Center shortcuts (flashlight, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, Music player, etc), it now shows this redundant "recents" app icon dock, then I have to swipe up AGAIN each time to see Control Center, which also shows recently-open apps... and the homescreen dock got messed up with recent and additional icons as well that I can't seem to be able to remove.

I went into Settings > General > Multitasking & Dock, turned off "Show Suggested and Recent Apps", but that didn't seem to change anything, and I've got a folder icon that I can't seem to remove from the dock (there's only an x button when I long-press it, which only lets me completely delete the app).

If I go instead into Settings > Control Center, the only option there is to add or remove apps from the shortcuts...

What is going on?! This is super-frustrating, not how I use my iPad (nor how I want to), has added junk in my way, more steps, become less intuitive, mixed things that I don't need mixed, and apparently impossible to fix.

Also I help someone with their iPhone/iPad who couldn't make sense of it, doesn't like it, and has said they no longer want to run updates on their Apple devices now... Bravo! Now I have to convince a non-tech user to update their Apple devices and they're disgruntled at Apple and me for recommending it!

How do I fix this? As far as I can tell this is unacceptable from Apple, who should not be rearranging the display and features and recognizable looks at random whims to be hip, making it difficult for users to rely on their interfaces.

With each new iOS release there’s a learning curve to familiarize oneself with new functionality and user interface.
