iTunes 12.6 very slow to start/run and not acce...

I'm on Windows 7 SP1 with all the available updates for my OS installed, and installed the 12.6 update for iTunes the other night.

The next morning I noticed that when I started iTunes, that while it looked to have loaded up my cursor was just spinning over it. About 10 minutes later it was allowing me to go in and edit my playlists so I thought that was just something weird and moved on.

Later though, I saw that my podcasts weren't updating and that when I attempt to go to the store to manually download them I was getting the same behavior as on startup (seems to lock-up, cursor spinning) though it never loads into the store and the main area just stays white.

I should note that I can download podcasts "manually" on my iPod, sync that with iTunes to transfer the podcasts to my computer, edit my playlists and then sync my iPod again to get this going. Though even then during the sync things aren't showing up properly (I see files appear on my iPod well before the "copying files" stage of the sync starts on iTunes).

Things I've tried to fix this:

1. Run the iTunes installer again in case something was broken during the install. No change.

2. Do a System Restore to several days back as I couldn't find a 12.5.x installer for iTunes to rollback with. No change.

3. Restart system multiple times during multiple little tests that had no change to the behavior.

As I've seen a few other threads that seem similar to mine here, though in those it seems like iTunes won't start at all so mine is getting a little further, with people after the 12.6 update I thought I'd see if anyone has any suggestions or knows of a fix/workaround to the behavior to get iTunes up and running again.

I did some further research on the forums here, and found this discussion that spoke on how to completely remove iTunes from your system and had links to the older versions: Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates

From there, I backed up my \iTunes folder with the music library .itl files in it, uninstalled and installed 12.5.5.5 again so now iTunes is working for me.

Not sure what changed in 12.6, but my system certainly doesn't like it much. But at least this way I learned more about how to repair iTunes and I'll probably stick around on 12.5.5.5 for a few versions to see if this problem gets mentioned as resolved.

Horrible is "way too kind" a description of this new release.  It was first made available (to me anyhow) on March 23, 2017. Since then I have lost 12 hours of my life dealing with it.

At 58 years of age every hour stolen from my life is valuable.

The prior version, 12.4.3 available here works perfectly.

I spent two hours of my life with a "senior support" specialist on March 24th

Nice gentleman whom I really liked. The problem is that he knew virtually nothing about where hidden Apple files would remain on my system.

He was only able to direct me in the removal via control panel of a specific order of prior Apple installations.  In short Apple needs a much more specialized and trained staff to deal with Windows 7 installation issues, at least if Apple wants to actually understand the troubles of its products with a large segment of their user base.

As I type this I have tried perhaps my 10th installation of 12.6.100 with continued freeze up failure and I am beyond angry about it.

Beyond removing all Apple installations in the recommended order I have removed ALL Apple files from hidden locations Such as the various "Roaming Files" as well as the "program data files" located (again in a hidden folder) directly off the C drive.

I am going to try one more incredibly clean installation (even going so far as to remove quick time) at which point I will revert to 12.4.3 permanently with a solid amount of disgust for having been put through this ordeal.

When you backed up your iTunes did it save the ratings and play counts?

Hi... I see your question is directed to “dereckc1” but I thought I would provide an answer of my own;

In my quest to get iTunes 12.6.100 to work I deleted my prior iTunes library (along with every other apple file other than my actual music and media)

As a result, no ratings and play counts survived.

I remain using 12.5.5.5 which is the newest version that works for me.

I have heard nothing more from Apple directly which both disturbs me and disappoints me greatly.

And how you solved the issue of iTunes Library.itl file not recognized by iTunes 12.5, since it was rewritten by 12.6? In my case, 12.6 did start some times, but failed mostly. So I guess you were never able to start iTunes 12.6, therefore the .itl file was never updated to new version?

Same setup (software-wise) and same problem; Itunes takes many minutes before it becomes responsive again.
In the top right it says that it's trying to connect to itunes store, which takes ages too.

I thought it'd be a one-time issue (like syncing album art or something like that) so I let it do it's thing.
Now, after 5+ tries, it still stays the same; itunes takes minutes upon opening.

At first I tried starting itunes while keep pressing shift and load itunes with a clean library: same result.

Tried reinstalling: same result.
Don't want to remove completely and don't want to build a new library (that'd be the third one in a few years after apple keeps messing up updates).

Following this topic, waiting for an apple fix. It worked in previous versions. Let them come up with a **** good excuse on why it's borked like this now.

Quite a specialist if he doesn't even know the location of the files (he should have proper support documentation on that, trust me, I've been there).

What he offered you is the standard "if nothing else works"-method of cleaning up and starting anew. This tells me apple doesn't have a fix themselves (yet).

I remember itunes issues for windows users from about a year ago where apple eventually offered special installation files to be able to solve (talking about workarounds; the software wasn't available to customers through the download portal at first).

I'll await a fix. I didn't change anything and still it got borked. They made the mess, they clean it up.

Nevermind, found an older file in "Previous iTunes Libraries" directory, which iTunes itself manages

Hi there,

Really hoping you can help me.

I ran into the same problem as you and having read the posts, I am struggling to understand what it is I have to do to get me iTunes working again. It just freezes and stays frozen (Thanks for nothing Apple) ...

I'll admit it as a noob I am completely hopeless and since I have over 500 GB of Films, TV Programmes and Music to lose, I would like to avoid doing so.

Could you provide me with a step-by-step instruction on what I need to do - I would really appreciate it.

My iTunes installation is on one drive, my library and files on another and this is an added complication for me.

I am worried that if I simply uninstall, it will take my files with it. That's hours of reinstalling and reimporting, rating, etc.

Can you help?

Kind regards

Mike

See the iTunes installers section of the troubleshooting tip. You will be able to restore the pre-upgrade version of your library which will bring back all ratings, play counts, etc.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

Believe me, I have read through several posts on this forum including yours, but I do not understand this technical stuff at all.

I need someone to tell me step-for-step what I have to do. I am over 80 and so computers are not something I use with any deal of confidence ...

Mike

Use the programs and features control panel to uninstall each of these items in this order:

  1. iTunes
  2. Apple Software Update
  3. Apple Mobile Device Support
  4. Bonjour
  5. Apple Application Support 32-bit
  6. Apple Application Support 64-bit

Reboot the computer

Use Windows Explorer to open your iTunes folder inside your user's Music folder

Select the file iTunes Library then press F2 on the keyboard and rename it as iTunes Library (Old)

Open the Previous iTunes Libraries folder

Select the file iTunes Library 2017-mm-dd and press Ctrl+C top copy it, the exact filename will be when you updated

Go back to the iTunes folder

Press Ctrl+V to paste

Press F2 to rename and change the filename to iTunes Library

Follow the iTunes installers link and choose the relevant 32-bit or 64-bit version of iTunes 12.5.5.5 to reinstall, download it & install

Please feel free to post back if you need me to explain any of the steps in more detail.

Thanks tt2, I will follow the instructions and get back to you if I run into any problems ...

Mike

I tried to follow your instructions too, but somehow I messed up my library.  I got a message that it couldn't read the library because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.  Any thoughts?  Thanks so much!
