Also consider the screen, 15" Retina  vs 21" 4K or 27" 5K and stronger GPU. And the price, which is obviously dependent on which configuration of each you'd get, is up to $1100 less for an iMac. Portability is the only thing the MBP has going for it. There is really no choice to make, the iMac wins hands down.

That's going to depend on exactly which specs you are looking for on each Mac.

There may be little difference in terms of performance between an entry level Macbook Pro and a regular retina (not 4k) iMac.

But there may be an ocean of difference between a fully decked iMac 27" 5K, and even the top of the line MacBook Pro.

For Photo Editing, you would not need much more than an iMac 4K or a middle of the road MacBook Pro.

I'd generally suggest an iMac if only because photo editing on a 13" or 15" MacBook Pro can be tiresome. The large screen is better for image manipulation.

Choice will also be dictated by your budget.  at $1299 the iMac gets more ram, a faster processor and more storage than the similarly priced MacBook Pro to which you still may want to add a large external monitor and an external drive.

Generally unless you need the portability, I'd go for the iMac.
