The most basic issue is that 4 GB of RAM is barely sufficient for Sierra. Notice that processes are being killed to make room in RAM for ones being used, or called to load at the moment. The i5 isn't exactly a screamer of a CPU, either, but was considered decent in 2012.

Increasing the amount of RAM would be the first thing to do. 8 is the official maximum supported in that model, but users have found you can put in 16.

** you can put in 16GB PROVIDED you buy it from a Vendor who knows something about Macs. Don't buy it unless they say:

"it works in YOUR Mac,

or your money back."

Otherwise you could end up owning perfectly good RAM modules that do not happen to work properly in your very fussy Mac.

Hello boliviano,

It isn't that slow. My suggestion would be an SSD. You have to open up the machine for that, so may as well add RAM too. And make sure to update your software. You are running an old version of MalwareBytes.

Absolutely. I got that info from everymac.com, where I looked up the specs on a 2012 MacBook Pro. They're normally very accurate, and noted that 8 GB is Apple's intended max, but 16 works. A person could also contact macsales.com (Other World Computing) and ask. They test every Mac with every possible configuration to see if things like this do or don't work.

Nothing I figure you don't already know. The info is more for everyone else.

I would second the suggestion for an SSD or, at the least, a 7200 rpm hard drive as your stock drive is a glacially slow 5400 rpm hard drive which does absolutely everything about 33% slower than a stock 7200 rpm drive in a 27" iMac. I have the same MBP and put in more RAM and an SSD right after I bought it - it is very snappy and quick. And yes, you should add more RAM - 4 GB is the absolute minimum for the newer OS versions. OWC (macsales.com) is one of two most recommended vendors here and they have SSDs, hard drives, and RAM. They also have excellent install videos - I followed their instructions when I did mine.
