AirPods stop working when microphone is in use ...

When I first started using the AirPods, about a month ago, everything was working well, listening to music, phone calls, etc. Now, I guess after the latest updates, I can't use them for phone calls AT ALL. Furthermore, even accessing the microphone through the system causes issues.

Issue: Audio becomes distant, and crackling, almost like getting audio feedback.

Triggers: Using the microphone in ANY WAY. Starting a call through Skype or other services. Even opening the Audio panel and speaking to the microphone triggers the issue.

Specs: MBP Retina Mid 2012 and AirPods first generation

This is a scenario that I've been able to recreate consistently:

  1. Start playing music through Spotify,
  2. Open Audio panel
  3. Go to the Input tab
  4. Issue kicks in and persists until the Audio panel is closed again

The AirPods have become completely useless for phone calls and I have to switch to wired headphones constantly.

Short update:

- Updated to macOS High Sierra and issue persists
