What do I do to speed up my iMac computer?

My iMac computer seems to be running a lot slower......I have a broadband connection. What is slowing it down? I empty the cache, history, and cookies, and it still runs slow..... Are there other factors like stored e-mail or photos? What does the computer do to store information anyway........are e-mail or photos kept and stored by the computer? Anyway, any help to speed up my computer would be very welcome.

Restarting the computer and emptying the trash immediately recreates new contents .
