Personal Hotspot Data Usage Question

I bring my Mac to work and use the Personal Hotspot on my iPhone for WiFi.

My question is I want to leave the iPhone hotspot on all day, connected to my Mac.  I am only checking email and sending imessage from the Mac 10 times a day.

Will leaving the Mac connected all day to my iPhone use a ton of data while the Mac is just sitting idle?  I understand if I let software updates download and run, that would be a huge use, but other than that, would it sap my data?

Right now I enable and disable Personal Hotspot repeatedly which gets old.  Thanks!
