Macbook touchbar and screen become unresponsive.

I've had a recurring issue on my Macbook (17 with touchbar/touch ID). I'm on the OS sierra system, v 10.12.6, with the 3.1 GHz i7, 16 GB memory, and 1 TB storage.

 

When I'm running chrome, my entire Macbook screen freezes. Any tabs with sound I have open will stop playing sound after a few seconds and I can no longer interact with any of the webpage or the system itself. The touchbar also becomes unresponsive, but I can still move the cursor and my keyboard is still active (cursor icon moves but doesn't interact with anything on screen and the caps lock light responds). I can't pull up the force quit menu, and end up having to manually use the touchID button to shut down my computer to restart it to get it running again.

 

Sometimes the issue goes away after a few minutes but other times it persists for longer. I'm not sure what else I can do. I rebooted in safemode but found no errors.

 

If anybody could provide some guidelines, that would be greatly appreciated.



Try rebooting in safe mode: does the screen freeze then also?

No, the only strange thing I noticed in safe mode was that the chrome display was sometimes glitchy.
