a new user appered when i started my computer. ...

I opened my laptop to find a new icon and name as a possible user.  How do I get rid of it and how did it get there?

Log it to an admin account > open System Preferences > Users & Groups > click on the lock > enter password > click on the user you want to get rid of > click on the minus sign.
