External Hard Drive Issues with Sierra
I am running Sierra on my 2015 iMac 27" Retina Display. I started using Sierra in May 2017.
My WD external hard drive - with 2 partitions - will not mount completely/correctly on this iMac. For months I've been thinking that my drive is going bad. The drive mounts, then it immediately unmounts itself with the typical "eject before unmounting" error, then mounts again, then unmounts and so on, until it is manually disconnected. It can only be disconnected after a shut down. Any attempt to restart the machine will freeze the Mac after the startup tone and cause the external HD and the Mac fans to start (if the external HD has fans - otherwise it just spins so loudly it sounds like fans are running).
In Safe Mode I was able to mount it and I could see the files inside, but any attempt to open or move these files was a coin toss between success and causing the above process to start, which caused me concern for the potential corruption of the file(s), so I quit doing that.
I checked my Energy-Saver settings to confirm that 'Put Hard drives to sleep when possible' was disabled.
I connected the 'problem HD' to each of the USB ports on my iMac - Same result. I used a different USB 3 cable from the drive into each of the USB ports - same result. I mounted other devices, including smaller capacity external HDs (one of which has 7 partitions) to any and all of the same ports - No problems at all. I concluded from this that the drive may be going bad.
Disk Utility in Sierra is no longer the help that it used to be. Users are no longer allowed to check/repair permissions on our own now. Permissions will repair themselves when the next OS update comes out. That's fine. I have no reason to access 10 years of work or the resources I have stored on these hard drives multiple times, daily. I'll just wait for the next OS update - whenever that may be. There is a First Aid button that fails to repair anything and tells me that there is an error that may prevent proper booting - "Thanks, Captain Obvious."
I was at my wit's end when I remembered that the drive used to work fine on the previous OS, on another computer. I hooked the drive up to my older MacBook Pro and had no problems.
How do I get this external HD to mount correctly on Sierra? Sierra is seeing a problem that doesn't exist on another OS. Is there an app that will allow me to run a proper disc repair, or a terminal command I can run to do this? Moving back and forth between machines, thumb drives and Safe Mode bootups is getting quite arduous and aggravating.
I am convinced that Sierra is the problem, but I will entertain other ideas.
I am also not willing to install High Sierra until the initial installation problems, boot failures and other crucial operational failures of this latest release have been corrected.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.
