Copy errors in High Sierra. Memory management?

Since upgrading to High Sierra yesterday, I now get errors when copying files to external drives. So if I copy 200 jpgs @ c10MB from my iMac to an external drive, part way it says something like "error - can't read or write file xxxxx".

If I then select a smaller group of files, including the named error-ing file, it all copies fine. This happened many times, naming a different file each time. If I copy around 50 files, it works fine - but I often have 3000+ files to move after a shoot.

I have tried an external SSD via USB and a lightning HDD, both have same problem. I rebooted a few times too. I also tried exporting a bunch of files from Lightroom to external drives and got all my files without an error, but upon inspection many were corrupted.
