Problems with Quick Time audio recordings

I have use Quick Time so infrequently that I am having a difficult time of it. Just now, I finally managed to record a song, but I am being told, "The document could not be autosaved. The movies in this document can't be used in compositions.

Now, I don't understand all of that, but it appears to me that my recording will soon disappear. Is that right? Is there a way to make the recording saveable?
