How do I change the sensitivity of my trackpad?...

Apple MacAir, 2.2 GHz, 8Gb Mem, 256 Gb storage.

Mac OSSierra, version 10.12.3

My Mac Trackpad has apparently become super sensitive using Safari.  Without touching the trackpad it moves the screen out of view, changes whatever I was reading to another item, enlarges whatever I was reading, skips one or two screens, changes the size of the screen, etc.  Just now, while correcting an error above, the view moved to the bottom of this screen without my doing anything.  l have been using computers (mostly PCs in the past) since 1985 without having these type problems.

I was on a chat with Apple support who told me to change the speed of the trackpad by going to Trackpad in Preferences, clicking on Point/Click and adjusting the Tracking Speed.  I have changed the speed from "Slow" to "Fast" but with no change to the problem.  The Chat told me that would also change the sensitivity, but, apparently, it doesn't.  I assume it may be a sensitivity problem and that I may be accidentally touching the trackpad, but even with a concerted effort not to touch the trackpad the issue continues.

This has continued for some time now.

Note: I received a dropdown early today telling me I had three malware items and recommended my going to MacKeeper to fix the computer.  I checked MacKeeper reviews, saw the report to NOT download MacKeeper, and disregarded the dropdown message.

Try going back to System Preferences/Trackpad and set the speed to just above Slow. Then go to System Preferences/Accessibility/Mouse & Trackpad/Trackpad Options and set the Scrolling speed to Slow and set Scrolling to with inertia. Test.

If that doesn't work, try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Eric,

Sorry for the delay, been "testing" for a few days.  Your first suggestion solved most of the problems, but not all.  I still seem to have a very sensitive touchpad and, for example, when looking at a series of events, like inputting a number, sometimes a series of events will occur; or the screen will suddenly change similar to a "dashboard" with the screen I was on in the center and blank screens on either side.  I have to click on the original screen to maximize it and continue working on it.  I downloaded etresoft app and ran it.  the Report is below.

EtreCheck version: 3.4 (420)

Problem: Other problem

Description:

A single click to open something on Safari can cause more than one actions to occur.  For example, one click will cause two actions in rapid sequence to occur.  Sometimes the screen will just change into a “dashboard” configuration with the screen becoming smaller in the middle and with two blank “screens” to the sides of the original screen.

Click [Clean up]. I don't see anything that should be causing what you are seeing.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

I'm not an IT and the first part of your email is confusing.  I can't find any "Clean up" function.  I searched under Help without success.  I researched com.adobe.ARM and it appears to refer only for windows.  I have only adobe acrobat reader DC and it does not have any clean up function.

I set up another user admin account.  So far, using it appears not to have the same problems as my original user account.  I assume, therefore, that there must be some issue in one or more of the apps available in the original account.  Since I have many apps, I'm not sure how to troubleshoot them.  Is there a recommended clean up app for Macs?

Run the report again and in it is the Clean up link to click.

Most posters recommend not using any cleaning apps because many of them clean out more files than they should and can make the OS unusable.

Check System Preferences/Accessibility/Mouse & Trackpad to see the settings in the new account that works and compare that to your normal user account.

This is getting frustrating.  I ran the EtreCheck again.  It removed the orphan file and changed a lot of the numbers, for example, in the System Launch Agents, etc., but other than that it was the same as I sent you earlier.  I then checked the trackpad setting between the new account and my old account and they are identical.

I checked again in an Internet newspaper.  Using the Trackpad, I opened an article and then started scrolling through it.  If I happened to scroll over an ad or another article, often the ad or article would immediately open without clicking on it.  I also tried with a solitaire card game and often, but not always, when I clicked to play a card several cards played in rapid succession.  Playing with the mouse, so far, only one card is played and rolling over an ad or article has not opened the ad or article.  This leads me to think again that something is wrong with the Trackpad sensitivity setting.

I replaced an old MacBook Pro with this MacAir in January.  This problem only started about a month ago.

Try booting into the Safe Mode (see links above) to see how the trackpad works. That eliminates 3rd party applications from starting.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

OK, I booted up in Safe Mode (several times, it's not grey as in PC safe mode).  It was full color and the only indication that I was in Safe Mode was that I could not turn on/off sound.  I played several games of solitaire and still had several times when several cards played at one click, indicating that I still had the problem.  I did not have time to check Safari.

I then opened Finder, but there was no Finder/View/Show View and no action for "command-J".  Note, in Sierra at the bottom of Finder is a box with Macintosh HD - User - (my user name) - Documents.  I double-clicked on User and it opened a list that included Library.  I opened Library and went to Preferences but there was no "com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad.plist".  I also looked at all the other folders under Preferences but could not find the "com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad.plist".

It appears I'm be back at square 1.

Note: even though I ordered this MacAir in early 2017, About this Mac indicates it is a 13" early 2015 computer.  I don't know if that means anything.

Just wanted to say thanks for your help.  I'm just sorry we couldn't resolve the problem.  For you information, I contacted apple support and they could not resolve it either.  I ended up having to disable "Tap to Click", a feature I used all the time.  They did give me the URL for two apple procedures to try, an SMC reset and a hardware diagnostic, but I haven't had the time to access them yet.

You are welcome. You computer should be under warranty if you ordered it in early 2017.

Heilbronner - I just read your post from June. Were you ever able to resolve the issue?

I'm having the exact same problem, with the exact same MBA - early 2105...only with High Sierra 10.13. My trackpad sensitivity was crazy...I was chasing the cursor like I was playing a pinball machine. It literally made my MBA unusable. The Apple Store is 50 miles away so I took the MBA to a local authorized Apple dealer with the intent of installing Sierra 10.12.6, which was stable on my MBA but they convinced me to have them just reinstall 10.13. $$$ I installed none of my 3rd party apps, only the Apple apps.

)

The reinstall made the MBA better but did not resolve the issue. I'm still chasing the cursor but it's manageable (but not acceptable). I get the feeling that the trackpad is reacting to my hands or fingers above it while I'm typing on the keyboard. When I typing, I never know where the cursor is going to end up.

I've restored my 3rd party apps and I'm doing a TM backup now. Then I'm thinking I'll do an install of Sierra and see what happens. This is all a big, huge waste of my time. I can't tell you how many hours (and $$$) I've spent trying to resolve this but it's an unacceptable number.

BTW, my iPhone, which I updated to iOS 11, is experiencing the same sensitivity to my touch (perhaps I'm emitting a strong electronic field around me - just now, when I attempted to enter the emoji, it first went in 3 lines above). Something is going on ;-0
