iTunes could not connect to the iPad...

I am constantly getting this annoying message in iTunes recently:

iTunes could not connect to the iPad “... iPad” because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes.

This has only happened since upgrading all of my software lately (iOS 11.0.2, macOS 10.13 + Supplemental update, and iTunes 12.7). I have both my iPad and iPhone setup to do WiFi sync to iTunes running on my Mac but I only get this error for the iPad. It seems iTunes will connect to my iPhone when it's locked, but it won't for my iPad. It is terrible annoying as the message reappears every minute or so after being dismissed.

I realize if I unlock the iPad it goes away but it has never done this in the past and is actually inconsistent as it does not do this with the iPhone. I end up having to completely quit iTune to avoid being bombarded with the error message.

Is this a known issue that iTunes keeps polling for the iPad? Why can't I get it to ignore the iPad when I dismiss the dialog box?

Thanks,

D
