Moving Gmail messages in Mac Mail

I have gmail accounts but prefer the Mac mail interface. I set up labels in gmail but when I try to drag read messages to the folders in Mac Mail, they don't stay. It takes 3-4 times to move them. It's totally frustrating. Can you share any wisdom here?
